Just in case you’re haven’t heard, we’re currently experiencing a Solar Maximum year, leading to an abundance of solar activity in 2024.  This has resulted in several coronal mass ejections, which often create stunning auroras here on Earth.  Chasing the Northern Lights, has been a bucket list item for me. In fact, just the weekend before, I had booked a points flight to Michigan, hoping to capture the aurora over a lake, but unfortunately, that aurora storm did not materialize.

On the night of  October 10 to 11th, a significant solar storm was forecasted to hit Earth, suggesting we might even see the Northern Lights in North Texas. Naturally, I reached out to   every female photographer I know to join me on a 90-minute drive after work to the darkest sky I could find.  The location needed to be open sky, north facing, on a lake and under 2 hours from home.  Thankfully Saumya was game for this last-minute escapade!

Once we arrived and parked in a dark, desolate boat ramp, we set up our cameras.  After our first 10 second exposure, we both screamed, jumped, and hugged each other in disbelief as we witnessed the pink aurora lighting up the sky.  It was an unforgettable moment!

These images I captured are taken with my Canon 5D with a 24 to 70 and with my Fuji Mirrorless with a 12mm lens.  I choose the Fuji for its wider angle to capture more of the expansive  sky, as the Canons’ 24mm felt a bit tighter. Honestly with the Canon, the entire sky was flowing pink, and I worried people might think I was editing the images. But I promise, it was truly that vibrant!
